Students of Makerere University filled the main hall on Wednesday afternoon as they turned up for the United Bank of Africa (UBA) chairman, Tony O Elumelu, a Nigerian businessman. Being the main speaker of the evening, Mr Elumelu delivered a motivational speech about the state of entrepreneurship in Africa and the Tony Elumelu Foundation.
“My networth is really not important to me because it’s a figure. What I do with it, however, is important because at some point you move from wanting to survive to building a legacy,” Mr Elumelu told Makerere students.
Elumelu also revealed that there are over 360 entrepreneurs/beneficiaries of the Tony Elumelu Foundation here in Uganda-some of which were present at the lecture. While addressing the issue of employing or partnering with family members in business, Elumelu advised the young entrepreneurs to make sure that there is alignment of interests, “ As you form partnerships, make sure there’s alignment of interests. When there’s alignment of interests, who you work with whether family or not doesn’t matter,” Mr Elumelu said.
The founder’s forum was an engagement kind of lecture where Makerere students were allowed to ask Elumelu questions and he answered right away. The Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe also attended the forum, who later showed his gratitude to Elumelu’s brilliant lecture.
Among other speakers included the former UBC Good Morning Uganda show host, Edwin Musiime who told Makerere students about how he rose from earning 25,000 UGX per month to earning millions of shillings later. The Lecture was sealed off by a photo moment where Makerere students happily took selfies with the Nigerian businessman.
