After a survey was conducted by the office of Dean of Students, over 50% of concerned students recommended that instead of the University providing poor quality food, the University should give them their money to buy food instead.
The results of the survey were endorsed by Finance, Planning and Administration Committee which later presented the matter to the University Council. On 1st March, the University Council decided to stop providing meals in halls of residence with effect from June 2018.
According to the Council’s resolution, each government sponsored student will receive food money worth UGX 476,000 per semester. After breaking down this amount of money, it was established that a student will have to spend a meagre shs4,000 as a daily budget for both lunch and supper.
This move has come with mixed reactions where the general public and students continue to wonder how 4000 can sustain an adult basing on the current economic status in the country.
