Following the recent wave of accidents that have taken place in Uganda during the last decade, students from Makerere University from the section of public health together with the Uganda Police have come up with a smart application to monitor accidents in the different regions of the country. The application is called the digital flash system.
The application will help locate the accident scenes, the number of victims involved irrespective of either being dead or alive plus the cars along with their registration numbers. The application will be available to all traffic officers on their smartphones.
All the traffic police officers will be trained to use the application and they will be required to have smartphones. The application has been mainly created to enable the Police and health providers collect the right data of the people who perish in road accidents compared to the manual data collection means that have been currently used by police which isn’t so accurate hence yielding wrong results.
During the launch, Dr. Olive Kobusingye, an accident and emergency surgeon said that the current system has too many challenges along with loopholes and this new application will create more accurate data collection. She also added that the app will enable better planning for the victims that will be involved in the accidents.
This system has been applied in areas of Mbale, Sironko and Kampala, and the data collected has been proved to be accurate. Later on it will be launched nationwide.
