Makerere University has stumbled in two consecutive moot court finals in South Africa in less than a year.
After narrowly missing out on the Disability Rights moot court competitions in November last year against the University of Zambia, Uganda’s premier institution of higher learning fell at the hands of arguably the best university in Africa right now, the University of Pretoria.
Makerere finished second in the hotly contested Manfred Lachs Space Law moot competitions.
Suffice to note is that Makerere doesnt teach Space Law but was able to floor last year’s competition winners, Obafemi Awolowo University from Nigeria.
Further more, Uganda has had no space connections with these better countries (Nigeria and South Africa) owning satellites in space and hugely financing National Space Agencies.
Greetings.
The team of two from Makerere that had Jeffrey Kaddu Suubi and David Kasibante brought home two accolades however. The accolades for second best Oralist and second best memorial as well.
This, I believe should serve as a wake up call for Ugandan universities to adopt teachings in that specific area of law and also call upon the central government to finance research in the space area of expertise so as to catch up with the other nations.
