The Dean of students at Makerere University has released a program for the swearing in ceremony of the guild president elect in the wake of petition claims by the runner-up, Edward Kinene.
The communique that was dated 19th March, 2018 was stamped and signed by Mr. Cyriaco Kabagambe, the embattled Dean of Students.
As the guild elections round-up today with the voting of Guild Representative Councillors (GRCs) from the several Schools and Halls of residence at the university, the administration seems to be in the greatest hurry to swear in student leaders in many years.
However, the first runner up Kinene is not resting either as he alleges to be in the final stages of filing a petition in the High Court to prevent all this.
Albeit inspired by events in the Ssemboga Roy – Bazil Mwotta court battle, the first runner up camp has decided to take their grievances to court to be able to settle their differences.
When contacted, the Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) Chairman Trevor Matovu acknowledged the presence of the petition but affirmed that it has not been lodged in the High Court yet.
All factors constant however, the guild president and the successful members of the GRC from today’s election shall be joined by the victors from the Students Common Room (SCR) elections that finalise on Wednesday that shall avail chairpersons from the various halls to constitute a fully fledged guild house that will be sworn in alongside the guild president.
The guild president elect Papa Were Salim is still tight lipped about his choice of cabinet members and has only reserved his comment on the above for times after the GRC elections.
The guild president has a provision of selecting three non-GRCs to occupy his cabinet as the other 18 must be members of the GRC.
