Makerere university guild leadership through the office of the Minister of Social Affairs has expressed its disappointed with some students who became chaotic during the 2022 freshers’ ball edition.
In his letter dated 19th March, 2022 addressed to the students’ fraternity, Hussein Ibra the minister of social affairs said he was dismayed by some students who turned chaotic towards the end of the freshers’ ball held on Friday 18th March, 2022 at Makerere’s freedom square thus the violent closure of the event.
Some students decided to spoil the event (freshers’ ball) by pelting bottles to Big talent’s Eddy Kenzo as he performed on stage. According to Hussein Ibra, these only wanted to spoil the event thus being chaotic.
“I want to express my disappointment though to a few of us who intended to spoil the event by stoning musicians and causing chaos among fellow students. It was really wrong harming a fellow student who you will have to live with in the same environment the day after,” part of the communique reads.
The Friday night chaos left scores injured as police tried to calm the students by firing teargas and bullets and the actual number of those injured is still unknown.
The social affairs minister however thanked students for turning up in large numbers for the 2022 freshers’ ball, adding that it’s the first event to have such a crowd ever since the reopening of the economy earlier this year.
“The freshers ball yesterday is the first party to have such a big attendance since the nation and concert were opened. This as of now is the Kivulu of the year 2022. Thank you once again dear Makererians,” he appreciated.
The 2022 freshers’ ball edition came in after close to two years with the previous having been held in 2019.
