Makerere University has released official guidelines on the payment of graduation fees for students set to take part in the institution’s 76th graduation ceremony, scheduled later this year.
In a notice dated October 24, 2025, the Office of the Academic Registrar outlined the mandatory fees that all graduands must clear before being allowed to graduate.
According to the communication, Ugandan and East African students are required to pay a total of Shs200,000, while international students must pay US$160. The fees cover convocation, graduation, transcript, certificate and graduation gown.
The fee breakdown for Ugandan and East African graduands includes Shs10,000 for convocation, Shs40,000 for graduation, Shs30,000 each for the certificate and transcript, and Shs90,000 for the graduation gown. International students will pay US$10 for convocation, US$60 for graduation, and US$30 each for the certificate, transcript and gown.
The university directed that graduation gown fees be paid directly to the Makerere University Endowment Fund through a designated DFCU Bank account, while the remaining fees should be paid in banks authorized by the Uganda Revenue Authority.
The notice further states that PhD graduands will be required to pay an additional cylinder fee of Shs50,000 and Shs600,000 for a graduation gown, on top of the standard graduation fees.
Makerere University emphasized that payment of all graduation-related fees is part of the clearance process and a mandatory requirement for participation in the graduation ceremony.
The notice was signed by Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi, the Academic Registrar, who urged students to complete payments in time to avoid delays in clearance ahead of the ceremony.
Makerere University remains one of Uganda’s largest public universities, graduating thousands of students annually across undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes.
