Makerere University Batooro students have, through their joint body Makerere University Tooro Students Association, rejected their newly appointed prime minister.

The students say Mr Kiyingi Steven’s appointment as the omuhikirwa (prime minister) is illegal.

They further allege that he is not a Mutooro and above all, he is a non Uganda thus not befitting the position of prime minister.

In a letter shared with this publication, the students cite breach of Tooro Kingdom’s constitution during Kiyingi’s appointment.

“The appointment contravened articles 27 and 28 of the Tooro Kingdom constitution which requires that the king nominates the Omuhikirwa,” part of the letter reads.

The students are calling upon concerned authorities in Tooro Kingdom to resolve the issue for the good of the Kingdom.

Mr Kiyingi was appointed by King Oyo Iguru IV to take up Bernard Tungwako’s shoes who resigned from the position recently.

Kiyingi’s appointment was received with a bitter reception from Tooro Kingdom’s council, and Batooro Students have also joined the wagon.
