Operatives attached to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit last week were dispatched to raid Uganda’s biggest public university, Makerere University. The Maj. Edith Nakalema headed anti-corruption unit mounted a search at the Ivory Tower and arrested Makerere University bursar, Everest Bainomugisha.
Bainomugisha was whisked away from his new swanky office at the new CTF1 building where he relocated after the burning of the Ivory Tower. Sources say that Bainomugisha was chairing a small staff meeting in the large open office space when the operatives quietly walked in and ordered everyone out before dragging him out top their waiting cars.
The other staffers were ordered to leave their computers and emails open besides ensuring all the PCs were de-pass worded. The offices have remained inaccessible even today Friday making the situation more tense at Makerere.
According to sources close to Mulengera News, some of the things being inquired into are the circumstances under which the University has continued losing court cases leading to a bill of over Shs100bn mostly resulting from lost litigation causes. Makerere University is always represented by Kateera Kagumire & Co Advocates law firm. It looks like Makerere will not be renewing their lucrative contract as it was advertised on Friday in the Daily Monitor.
Museveni, the President elect, also wants to understand why Makerere, which spends so much on hiring lawyers, is only second to the Attorney General’s chambers when it comes to expensively losing even simple cases that could otherwise have been avoidable. The most recent case notoriously related to retirees who protested nonpayment of their retirement benefits in court resulting into an award of Shs23bn.
Sources say that President Museveni wants the Makerere legal contract inquired into and it is considered the arrested Bursar must be having a lot of information relating to the same.
During the raid, the operatives also ransacked several other offices and attempted carrying away one of the influential PAs from the VC’s office but the gentleman eluded them by locking himself up in the toilet for the entire afternoon.
