The Academic Registrar at Makerere University has announced the commencement of applications for admission to Graduate Programmes for the academic year 2024/2025. The programmes available include Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters, and Doctoral Degree Programmes across various fields of study.
Admission Requirements:
- Applicants must have obtained at least a first or second class degree (or its equivalent) from a Chartered University at the time of completion.
- Possession of a Uganda Certificate of Education (or its equivalent) and a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (or its equivalent) is mandatory.
Sponsorship:
All Graduate Programmes are PRIVATELY-SPONSORED. Therefore, applicants seeking sponsorship must have their applications endorsed by their respective sponsors where applicable. It is important to note that the various fees payable to the University, as indicated for the different programmes, EXCLUDE functional fees, accommodation, books, research, and other related expenses.
PhD Degrees by Research:
For those interested in pursuing PhD degrees by Research, all Colleges offer this option. Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in a field relevant to their area of further studies. Additionally, they should have obtained at least a first or second class degree (or its equivalent) from a Chartered University at the time of completion. Those applying for PhDs by Research will need to submit online applications and provide four hard copies of the concept note to Office No. 410, Level 4, Senate Building.
How to Apply:
- Visit the Makerere University Admissions URL at https://apply.mak.ac.ug
- Sign up using your full name, email, and mobile number. Ensure that your name matches the one on your supporting academic documents for validation.
- A password will be sent to both your email and mobile number. You will be prompted to change the password to one you can easily remember.
- To fill out the application form, click on the “APPLY NOW” button (for first-time applicants) or “MY PORTAL” button (for application renewal) displayed on the appropriate scheme i.e., Taught PhDs, Masters & Postgrad Diplomas OR PhD by Research.
- Scan and upload all academic transcripts/certificates and passport photos onto the system.
- Access the referees’ form using the following link: Referee Letter of Recommendation. Complete the form, scan, and upload.
- Obtain a payment Reference No. by clicking on the “Pay for Form” button.
- Make payments at any of the banks authorized by the Uganda Revenue Authority. The application fee is UGX 50,000 for East African applicants or UGX 151,500 for International Applicants. International applicants can transfer fees by EFT or any other means in UGX to a designated URA collection account at Bank of Uganda (details provided below).

Important Notes:
- Ensure strict observance of the closing date: Friday, 31st May 2024.
- Applicants for Master of Laws (LLM) will undergo a Graduate Admission Test (GAT), consisting of an oral interview and a written test. Dates and other requirements will be communicated by the School.
- Applicants for Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the College of Business and Management Sciences and Makerere University Business School will undergo a GMAT test. Dates will be communicated by the respective institutions.
- Additional requirements for applicants for Master of Public Infrastructure Management (MPIM) include:
- Proven professional experience of at least 2 years at a managerial/supervisory level or in a policy-decision making position.
- Attach a 2-page short CV and referee recommendations to the application.
