In a move to reduce deaths caused by accidents on the lakes and rivers of Uganda, Makerere University has joined other stake holders in the country and donated offerings to the Police Marine.
Through the School of Public Health, Makerere contributed 90 life rings to the unit and this was received by AIGP Edward Ochom the Director of Operations at a ceremony held at the Marine headquarters in Kigo.
“This donation will go a long way in saving lives on water incase of accidents and I take this opportunity to thank Makerere University for the gesture and hereby urge them for more cooperation” Ochom said while addressing the press from the institution.
The donated life rings were later tested by the Police Marines who confirmed their durability and safety incase of any accident.
It should be remembered that in November 2018, at least 30 people drowned and more than 60 were feared dead after a pleasure boat sank in Lake Victoria and at the end of August this year, the IUEA boss family got involved in nasty boat accident that claimed the life of his wife and daughter.
