Makerere University emerged runners up in the 4th Annual African Disability Rights Moot Court Competition after losing to the University of Malawi in the moot that was organised by the Centre for Human Rights of the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
Makerere, who were the defending champions, beat the University of Zambia to reach the final.There were nine teams in total from Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Malawi,Zambia,Uganda and Mozambique.
The finals were held today Thursday November 10th, 2016 and the event was mainly concerned with rights of persons with albinism.The Makerere team comprised of Joel Aaron Kaleeba, a second year student and Atim Miriam who is in 4th year.
Atim Miriam emerged the best oralist in the tournament.
The Disability Rights Moot attracts students, lecturers and judges from all over Africa with each of them having a category to participate in. All law faculties in Africa send one faculty representative who works in the field of human rights to serve as a judge in the preliminary rounds, and two undergraduate students who constitute the team that represents its University at the Moot Court. As a must, one must be female.
The competition takes place every year in November and usually coincides with the annual disability rights conference.
