This year’s edition of the East African Debate ran from 1st – 8th August at Kyambogo University where five East African countries (Uganda, Kenya,Tanzania, Rwanda and South Sudan) participated with the exception of Burundi. The British Parliamentary Debate structure requires only English speaking countries to participate.
Thirty two Universities were involved with over one hundred teams of two people each. The grand finale presided over by the Deputy Prime Minister HON. Ali Kirunda Kivejinja was held yesterday where the mighty Makerere University emerged the best. This was after only two Universities of Strathmore (kenya) and Uganda’s Makerere University mananged to make it to the finals. Makerere debate stars Luyombo Abass and Awino Mercy lead the East African Academic giant institution to a historical win of the East African Universities Debate.
However Kyambogo University which has been the champion in the past years lost out as the EAUDC said Kyambogo University didnot pull out their best performance because they were busy making their visiting collegues comfortable. “We are always told that our students these days lack communication skills when they go to workshop places but i want to affirm that these (debaters) will not be among such”.Prof Elly Katunguka Kyambogo’s Vice Chancellor defended. Njuguma Machara from Strathmore University in Kenya was awarded the best speaker of the tournament.
