Makerere University took the decision to expel two staff members at the School of Health Sciences over marks forgery and smuggling of unqualified students onto the 2017 graduation list on Friday.
The expelled University staff comprise of the College Senior Administrative Assistant, Mr Paul Apunyo and the Deputy Registrar of the College of Health Sciences, Ms Fatuma Nakatudde. It is believed that the two officials entered falsified marks for two students, Rogers Mushabe and Alex Madile into the Makerere University examination results system and went an extra mile to include their names on the February 2017 graduation list.
There were also demotions issued against Dr Isaac Okullo, the Deputy Principal of the College of Health Sciences and Dr. Rose Chalo Nabirye, the Dean of the School of Health Sciences. The demotions were made due to the failure of these officials to detect and prevent fraud.
On 5th of October, 2018, the decision to dismiss the staff was taken at the 575th meeting of the Appointments Board of the University. The Board argued that the actions of the two staff resulted into “gross misconduct” in contravention of Section 5 and 8 of the Makerere University Human Resource Manual.
The names of the affected staff were then forwarded to the Directorate of Human Resources on October 10 for action hence promulgating into the dismissal in relation to Section 5, 9 (d) of the Makerere University Human Resource Manual.
During the Weekend, Prof. Barnabus Nawangwe confirmed the dismissal and demotions of the Makerere staff members.
“This goes as a warning to all those that handle students’ marks. No level of fraud shall be tolerated. On that note therefore, we shall recall the degrees of those students though they have a right to appeal,” Prof. Nawangwe informed.
The dismissed staff were asked to hand over office and University property in their possession to the principal, College of Health Sciences
