Makere University has today flag-off it’s student – Oroma Peace a 2nd year Bachelor of Science in Meteorology who is part of Ugandan Paralympics Team set to represent the country in the forthcoming Paralympics Games in Tokyo. The Tokyo Paralympics are an upcoming major international multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities governed by the International Paralympic Committee. Paralympics involve athletes with a range of disabilities, including impaired muscle power, impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency, leg length difference, short stature, hypertonia, ataxia, athetosis, vision impairment and intellectual impairment.
Today, Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe officiated the flag-off as he revealed with a Tweet; “I have flagged-off Oroma Peace a 2nd year Bachelor of Science in Meteorology student who is representing Uganda at the Tokyo, Japan Paralympics. @Makerere has over the years represented Uganda at international sports events. I wish Oroma and Team Uganda success”.
Scheduled as the 16th Summer Paralympic Games, they are scheduled to be held in the Japan capital between 24 August and 5 September 2021. They were formerly scheduled to take place between 25 August and 6 September 2020. On 24 March 2020, the IOC and the Tokyo Organizing Committee officially announced that the 2020 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Paralympics will be postponed to 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, marking the first time that the Paralympics has been postponed. They will still be publicly marketed as the 2020 Summer Paralympics, even with the change in scheduling to one year later.
