The tragic incident on Lake Victoria that left scores of Ugandan revelers dead did not spare an innocent soul who had just completed his education and started to experience the hustle of the real world.
Mbule Hakim Arnold, who graduated with a Bachelor of Development Studies from Makerere University in January this year also died on the Templar boat that capsized on Lake Victoria during a boat cruise on Saturday evening.
Mbule, with two other friends and former course mates at Makerere who have been identified as Kaweesi Ellison and Edward Kateerega were busy working at the time the disastrous incident happened. These were operating as ushers for an Ushering and Hospitality Company, Elite Ushering on the Templar boat.
Fortunately, Kaweesi and Kateerega were among the lucky survivors of the tragedy because they managed to fight hard and swim out of the deep waters.
“It was survival for the fittest and one man for himself. The moment the boat capsized most of us were struggling to get on top of the boat and hold on until the rescue team would come and pick us up. Unfortunately for Hakim, he fell into the waters and there was no sight of him until we realised that he had died,” said Kateerega.
He also mentioned that most of the ladies died because they could not swim and were not putting on life jackets at the moment. He said that even the few who had life jackets wore them wrongly which would not enable them to float on top of the water.
Hakim has been described by friends and course mates from Makerere University as a selfless, intelligent, and hardworking man who was so influential in the eventual graduation of most of his friends while at University.
“This whole Lake Victoria tragedy seemed so far from me until it became evident that I lost a friend, Hakim. My thoughts are with the family of the deceased. We have lost an intelligent and hardworking boy,” a friend, Elasu Edmond narrated.
May the Soul of the departed rest in eternal peace.
