Guid elections at Makerere university always come with a different alien vibe. Students energetically move around campus during campaign rallies and one may wonder if they are in their right senses.
A shocking revelation has been made by the deputy Dean of students and warden University hall, Peter Raven.
According to Peter Raven, Makerere university students use alcohol which makes them do a lot of crazy things during the guild campaigns.
Besides, he says guild aspirants hire drunkards during campaign time in order to have a more vigorous and violent campaigns that delude students.
This he said at a dialogue to assess the impact of substance abuse and possible solutions on Thursday 3rd March at CEDAT conference hall that he attended as a representative of the Dean of students.
“The time of guild elections, people hire drunkards from Kalwere, Kamwokya so that they have a more violent force,” Peter remarked.
The University Hall warden also noted that alcoholism has existed in Makerere for ages. For instance, he pointed out the 84th guild cabinet which he termed as mafia guild, saying that most of its members were drug users and alcoholists.
Raven says that the university is now coming up with a policy against drug abuse which they believe will help fight the vice.
“We are drafting a policy with the dean of students against drug abuse,” he revealed.
The discussion was aimed at formulating a solution to drug abuse, a vice that has widely spread in higher institutions of learning. Three competitors presented solutions to the vice and were given prizes for their participation.
Motoka Ritah Natocho took the third place while Anyumiza Innocent and Atandu Harmony took the 1st runner up and first position respectively.
The dialogue was organized by Makerere university’s 87th students welfare Ministry as part of its efforst to fight drug abuse among university students
