Makerere university guild leaders have been advised to work hard and complete their education and graduate; the primary reason why they are at campus.
During the induction of the 87th guild leadership held on Wednesday 2nd March 2022, Reverend Asiimwe Onesimus, commonly known as Uncle O, the head of clergy at St Francis Chapel Makerere, cautioned guild leaders on abandoning school and focusing on only politics.
Uncle O says that much as the leaders have to serve, they are students before being leaders hence ought to fulfill their duties as students.
“You are a student before you are a guild leader, your priority should be to accomplish your duty as a student,” Uncle O said.
Uncle O further advised guild leaders to utilize each and every opportunity they have as these come once in a lifetime.
“An opportunity of a lifetime must be seized in the lifetime it occurs. Such opportunities do not come by more often,” he added. “There’s a time for everything and a season for everything under heavens.”
The Makerere university 87th leadership was inducted on a number of leadership aspects such as policy processes in a university context. Ms Winfred Kabumbuli, the university’s Dean of students advised the leaders to be aware of the needs of their constituents and respectfully represent them.
However, Shamim Nambassa, Makerere 87th guild president sadly noted that its quite hard to represent every one’s needs as a leader. This she said basing on her experience as an academic minister in the 86th house.
Uncle O’s remark comes at a time when it’s sadly public knowledge that Makerere university guild leaders, especially guild presidents, fail to graduate and even those who do, usually graduate with pass degrees.
Guild presidents are fond of concentrating on politics as it proves to be a financially fertile field thus forgetting to accomplish their academic responsibilities
