To mark this year’s international women’s day, Makerere University Guild leadership through the Office of the Guild President has joined the rest of the world to commemorate this day by extending mentoring to girls in secondary schools.
Makerere University Guild President Shamim Nambassa started a campaign to end teenage pregnancies in Northern Uganda which has high rates of teenage pregnancies.
Nambasa, together with other guild leaders visited schools such as Ajia Secondary School in Arivu – Arua. While speaking to the school students, Nambasa encouraged students to prioritize education as one of the ways for them to become responsible citizens.
‘’Whereas it’s a collective effort of everyone in society to protect the girl child, it’s our moral duty to lift each other, supporting ourselves hand by hand. In the bid to break the bias, I was in Arua district, promoting girl child education, ending teenage pregnancies through sensitization and inspiration. Due to unfavorable conditions, the percentage of school going girls in Arua remains very small, something that must make us all worried about the future since training a girl child is having a nation trained,” she posted on her social media platforms.
She requested her fellow women to join efforts with an aim of breaking the bias about women and girls in the society.
‘’Life is tough, my fellow women, but so are we. This women’s day, let’s be reminded that a successful woman is one who can build a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at her,’’ she appealed.
Let’s #breakthebias2022. Happy women’s day.
