Makerere University’s 90th guild president Vincent Lubega Nsamba has said guild presidents at Makerere University are chosen by God.
Nsamba made the statement as he delivered his maiden speech after taking oath as the 90th guild president on March 18, 2024. He said his candidacy faced so many challenges but God helped him succeed.
“I can profoundly say that Makerere University guild presidents are chosen by God. There have been so many blockages but it has been God,”he said.
Nsamba called upon the university administrator to work with the new leadership to amend the guild statute which he says is an infringement to students rights. He said if he fails to peacefully amend the statute, he will have no choice but to let students force the administration to amend it in their own way.
“To our administrators, those who sit in the university council. I think it is time for us to have honest conversations on how we can amend the guild statute. If dialogue fails, of course, the Makerereans know the way,”he said.
Maseruka Robert, Nsamba’s immediate predecessor, told the new leaders to be careful while in office because they will be accountable for everything they do.
Maseruka was praised by the Dean of students Mrs. Dean Winifred Kabumbuli for advocating for social events. She urged the new leadership to always listen to the voices of the students that have voted them.
“As u embark of this journey of leadership, remember the importance of listening to the voices of your fellow students,”she said.
Nsamba was sworn in with at least seven ministers and the rest shall be sworn in later. He attributed the delay to present a full cabinet list to the election petition that he has been battling with.
The sworn in cabinet members include Adroni Rodney as prime minister, Sserujoji Joy Eve as vice president, Mutumba Robert as minister for culture, Nakaziba shri (deputy prime minister, Gashema Coleb as minister for academic affairs, Abuk Mary (international students) and Herman Kasaija as minister for students affairs.
