The latest communication from Makerere University reveals that with effect from the next academic year 2018/2019, students at the Wandegeya based University will be required to pay a minimum of sh5 million as tuition for any given programme applied for.
Some of the affected programmes include Post Graduate Diploma (PGDs), Master’s and Doctoral Degree Programmes (PHDs). Over the past years, postgraduate students at Makerere University have been paying tuition ranging between shs1.7 million (for a postgraduate diploma in education) to sh5.7 million.
The new revised fees structure see both postgraduate diploma and the master’s students part with over shs5 million. On the other hand, doctoral students will be required to pay between shs7 million and shs8 million.
The international students’ tuition has also been hiked to the range of between sh8m to sh15m per annum but it is said that the majority will be paying between sh7m to sh8m.
According to Makerere University’s spokesperson Ritah Namisango, the increase in tuition was based on several recommendations including the Jamwa report, Prof Omaswa report as well as the visitation committee report.
She adds that the University authorities had earlier consulted the National Council for higher Education, the University’s planning and development department as well as the quality assurance doctorate.
