The confucius institute at Makerere University, the only institute of learning Mandarin in Uganda that was established by the Chinese embassy has so far had a good year run with holding events and competitions all with the aim of sharing the Chinese culture with the Ugandan community.
The institute has been able to arrange for the first Chinese song competition in Uganda where the finals were held at Makerere University and the event was graced by the presence of Professor Barnabas Nawangwe the vice Chancellor of Makerere University.
The singing competition was themed “voice into my heart” and saw winners walk away with lavish prizes and also saw Hunan Association in Uganda grant scholarships to students studying Mandarin but with tuition incapabilities and also made a generous donation to the university.
Today they are sharing a Chinese custom to paper cutting lessons as one of china’s oldest folk arts of the Han people on their social media. The paper cutting was done to celebrate new seasons or wedding ceremony among the many other festivals that are celebrated by the Mandarin speaking people.
