In its efforts towards being a research led and digitalised institution, Makerere University has launched the Research Information Management System (RIMS).
The system was launched on Thursday, April 25, 2024 by the state minister for higher education Hon. John Chrysostom Muyingo. The minister also launched the annual forum for Graduate Research and Policy Dialogue. This year’s two-day dialogue is being run under the theme: regional integration and development.
In his address, VC Nawangwe noted that African countries can only develop depending on the number of PhDs they have, noting that Makerere alone was able to graduate over 130 PhD students in the previous graduation ceremony.
“If Africa is going to industrialise, we must produce more PhDs because no amount of foreign direct investment is going to industrialise Africa. Africa will be industrialised by the small and medium enterprises, which will come mostly out of research by PhD and Masters students, and a few undergraduate students,” he said.
Ms Clare Cheramoi, President of PhD Fellows at Makerere University commended VC Nawangwe for his open-door policy that has enabled graduate students address their issues.
RIMS was developed by the Directorate for ICT Support (DICTS), under the ste of Mr. Samuel Mugabi, with funding from Makerere Research and Innovation Fund. The system will help fast-track the progress of graduate students and it has already been rolled at at various colleges.
