Member of Parliament for West Budama North, Fox Odoi, wants to give campus girls a green light to carry out abortion by urging Parliament to legalize this vice.  Fox argued that the only way to curb the increasing teenage maternal deaths is by legalizing abortion, Daily Monitor reports.

“You continue to lose lives because you choose to keep this law. We cannot continue to bury our heads in the sand. You cannot stop teenagers from having sex. Please legalize abortion because these young girls are dying from unsafe abortion because they know they are doing something illegal. There’s no way a child can be allowed to have a child,” Fox is quoted to have said.

So what impact will this have on university students?

Firstly, this will make campus students stop using condoms because pregnancy is the core reason these students have protected sex in the first place. And when this happens, the spread of STIs, especially HIV, will rapidly increase. Fox does not realise that he will be literally killing a lot of campus students once abortion in legalized.

But Fox Odoi doesn’t seem to be in alone in this. Dr. Christopher Ssemanda, a lecturer at Medical School, Makerere University explains that legalization of abortion will lead to reduction of deaths of campus girls who try to terminate unplanned pregnancies. “The main cause of complications (or even deaths) during abortions today is because they are performed when the feotus is somewhat matured. You find a girl wants to abort when she is already one month pregnant because it takes her a lot of time finding a doctor who is willing to perform the illegality. Therefore, legalizing abortion in the country will mean students will have easy access to experts who carry out the process while their feotus is still a few weeks old,” he told this Website before adding that  “Obtaining abortions earlier in the pregnancy makes the procedure safer, because earlier abortion is associated with a reduced risk of complications”.

Dr. Ssemanda adds that the replacement of unsafe, illegal abortions by safer, legal procedures will mean that girls will experience fewer serious complications.

He concluded by saying that transformed abortion from an unsafe, clandestine procedure to one performed under safe, medical conditions will see a reduction in abortion-related complications and deaths as safer options became available to teenage and university girls choosing to terminate an unplanned pregnancy.
