Makerere University main building reconstruction will be complete next year as opposed to October 2022.
Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe revealed that there was change of plan and that the main building will be complete next year.
In an interview with KFM, Professor Nawangwe said the contractors requested for additional time and thus the building won’t be complete this year.
Professor Nawangwe is optimistic that the reconstruction of the main building will be complete by June 2023.
Architect Nawangwe had earlier made an unrealistic statement that the reconstruction of the main building would take only six months.
However, this won’t be possible as the contractors are still demolishing the remains of the former structure upto date.
Professor Nawangwe further revealed that the government released all the UGX 21 billion required to restore the building to its former state.
Makerere University main building, commonly known as the ivory tower, was gutted by a fire in September 2020.
Despite the delay to start reconstruction, the main building will be delayed even further given the latest time extension to the contractors.
