Makerere university students from the college of health science stormed the office of the deputy vice chancellor in charge of academic affairs on Thursday 9th December throwing him out of office in a protest over COBERS facilitation fees.
In a letter dated 8th December addressed to the 87th guild president Nambassa Shamim, who also comes from the same college, the deputy vice chancellor academic affairs had distanced himself from the demand by students to have COBERS facilitation.
Prof. Umar Kakumba(Deputy VC Academic affairs) said that private students have no right over the COBERS facilitation and thus questioned the grounds on which they based to demand for the same.
“The office of the university secretary has clarified that facilitation for students on the COBERS program is provided for only those sponsored by government.” part of the letter reads.
However, students didn’t heed to this as they stormed his office from where they staged their strike over the same and not even police could calm the tension.
The students who were fully equipped with flasks and sugar bowls kept on taking their tea amdist the chaos as they vowed not to leave the office unless they are given their facilitation.
The Dean of students only tried to calm the situation by promising to have this facilitation paid but the students called this an empty promise and continued with their famous ‘wewe’ chants.
Students believe they have a right to be facilitated whether government or private sponsored since they do pay internship allowances.
By time of publication, the situation was still tense and its not yet clear if the university admistration will bow to their pressure and pay off their allowances.
