Makerere University is in mourning following the deaths of two lecturers from its Department of Community Education at the eastern study center in Mbale City. The law lecturers, Masaba Gabriel and Martin Mungau, both served as part-time staff and were involved in teaching administrative law courses at various university centers.
Mr. Masaba Gabriel, a part-time staff member from Nabumali, Mbale, was also a police detective with the Uganda Police Force. He was in his mid-30s and was laid to rest in Nabumali town council last week.
Mr. Martin Mungau, another part-time lecturer, had a broad teaching portfolio across multiple Makerere University centers nationwide. In addition to his role at Makerere, Mr. Mungau served as a Grade One Magistrate under the judiciary. A trained lawyer and administrator, he held two Master’s degrees in law and administration.
The Department of Community Education at Makerere University operates several centers across Uganda, tasked with training citizens in various fields. These centers, some over 60 years old, offer courses in administrative law, public administration and management, project planning and management, and medical records management. They also provide diploma programs and have been degree training centers for many years.
The Mbale branch of Makerere University, established in 1966, serves the regions of Teso, Bugisu, Sebei, and Bukedi, among others. Julius Arinaitwe, a lecturer in the Department of Community Education, expressed the university community’s sorrow over the loss.
“We shall miss them and we ask God to strengthen their families,” he said in mourning.
