Makerere University National Resistance Movement (NRM) chapter has made strides towards regaining popularity in the students populace.
The party has made a massive recruitment in its new leadership structures, restoring hope among its cadres.
In the new chapter leadership, Ariho Edmond alias Fati, who gained popularity in the final days of the 90th guild race, eventually becoming first runner up, will be the new president.
Ariho was elected chapter president last week in an election that attracted hundreds of NRM cadres. Ariho defeated Kizza Adonia, an aspirant in the 90th guild race that failed to secure nomination.
The party has also recruited Mukwaya Muhammadi, a former NUP member. Mukwaya was also an aspirant in the 90th guild race who ran as independent after losing the NUP flag to Lubega Nsamba Vincent.
The party has high expectations in both Ariho and Mukwaya. Given their popularity, the chapter hopes to regain popularity among students.
Other chapter leaders include Nanguni Gloria Immaculate, who will serve as the vice chairperson.
NRM has in the past made commendable efforts towards winning the guild presidential sit. In the 88th guild race, NRM candidate Hussein Ibra came second after NUP’s Alionzi Lawrence.
In the 89th guild race, the party supported Oremo Hillary Odwee, who disguised as an FDC aspirant, a move that was aimed at blindfolding students to vast votes in his favour. Oremo came second.
In the recent elections, the party fronted two candidates. Ariho Edmond, an independent but NRM leaning candidate lost to NUP’s Lubega Nsamba with a margin of four votes.
Some observers believe if NRM fronts a ‘sellable’ candidate in the next election, they stand a chance of pulling off a win.
NRM, after so many years, registered a win at MUBS, an institution affiliated to Makerere University. Amanya Moses became guild president after being endorsed by the then internet sensational Juma Wasswa Balunywa.
