Makerere University has announced a groundbreaking initiative in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation, renewing their partnership for the second phase of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program. This phase will span until 2034 and aims to offer 1000 scholarships over 10 years for selected undergraduate and master’s academic programs at Makerere University’s Main Campus.
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University seeks to deepen inclusive university education and empower youth to become leaders who will make meaningful contributions to national and regional development.
Eligible candidates must meet specific criteria to qualify for the scholarships. They must qualify for admission at Makerere University’s main campus for undergraduate degree programs under the Private Sponsorship Scheme. Additionally, applicants must have completed Advanced level education (or its equivalent) in an African country and demonstrate significant financial hardship. Leadership potential, a record of community service, and age criteria are also factors considered in the selection process.
Applicants are required to provide detailed information about their parents’ or guardian’s occupation. This includes descriptions of businesses, positions held in employment, or any other economic activities.
Interested candidates can apply through three options provided by the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University. They can apply directly online, download the PDF version of the application form for hard copy submission, or send the completed application form and accompanying documents via email.
It’s essential to note that the application form is free of charge, and no payments should be made at any stage of the selection process. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted for further selection engagements.
The deadline for submission is Friday, 14th June 2024, at 5:00 pm EAT. Incomplete applications will be automatically disqualified. The program emphasizes merit principles and has zero tolerance for dishonesty or influence peddling. Any fraudulent activity related to the scholarship application process will be prosecuted.
Successful applicants will be notified, and decisions of the Program Steering Committee are final. Applicants who have not received notification by the end of August 2024 should consider their application unsuccessful.
