Makerere University administration represented by the Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, yesterday handed over the reconstruction site of the iconic main building that was burnt down in late 2020 to the project contractor.
Prof Nawangwe disclosed to the media that the approved contractor is Excel Construction Limited that will oversee the re-erection of the notable building.
“This afternoon we have handed over the site for the reconstruction of the iconic Main Building to Excel Construction. I look forward to quality work by the Contractor on this extremely important building.” Prof Nawangwe Tweeted.
In a cabinet meeting held last year on August 30th, the Government of Ugandan through the Ministry of Education and Sports revealed a plan of restoration of Makerere university’s Main building (Ivory tower).
It was approved that the entire building be demolished and rebuilt to match its previous form and appearance as a way of conserving the architectural character of the building.
This was recommended by the two technical committee for the restoration of the ivory tower. It was agreed that before demolition of the remaining parts of the building, a detailed photographic and conservatory study and documentation will be conducted.
All key elements will be retrieved and stored in the museum called the main building museum 2020. Upon construction, the management of the university was tasked to ensure that all CCTV cameras in the building are fully functional and monitored from the central surveillance room at all times.
According to the plan, the main hall which was not affected by the fire will remain. However, it will be refurbished and equipped with modern technologies.
