Following suggestion by World Health Organisation and Ministry Of Health to incorporate herbalists into the health care team, Makerere University Pharmacy students came up with an idea to promote safe and efficacious use of the readily available herbs by studying the different herbs and come up with an extract which would be formulated into a safe product on the market. This comes as a result of various cases reported at Mulago Hospital of patient complications due to misuse of herbs.
A group of five undergraduate students studied the properties of eucalyptus citriodora, a readily available herb in Uganda and discovered that it had a noteworthy activity against dermatophytic skin infections. The essential oil was then extracted from the leaves and then tested on T.rubrum, a common cause of fungal infection.
A product was then developed following different studies that verified a concentration of 8%w/w as a safe and effective concentration. Studies were further carried out on rabbits to verify the efficacy of the ointment. The ointment can be used for various topical fungal, bacterial and mixed infections by applying twice daily for 3 weeks
