Edwin Birungi, a fist year student pursuing a bachelors degree in Music at Makerere University left the audience in awe after he recited a poem “The Great Institution.”
As said by Kasyate, the Master of Ceremonies at the great function which ran under the theme “Leveraging 100 years of excellence in building a transformed society,” the university put through a competition in creative art for someone that could best depict a hundred years through the science of poetry.
Edwin won this among hundreds of poetry pieces as his exceptional poem featured a series of innovation works and research items that the great institution has done.
The poem narrated the greatness of Makerere University at it’s best, the most prestigious university in East Africa.
It praises the intellectualism that has been the culture of those that were through and are at the University. The incredible piece also highlights the inventions and innovations that are a brain child of the university. It was such a reminiscing poem to the alumni.
The second last stanza of the poem began “Through the gates” making a symbolic throwback for each one’s time at the university.
Truly intriguing it was, as it propelled the alumni to talk about their “My MAK story”
As he ended his poem, Edwin called upon everyone to celebrate the past iconic century and embrace the new and better one yet to come.
