Makerere Law School represented by Judith Aboto and Simon Ssenyonga (former Guild President aspirant) who are both fourth Year students of Law have qualified for the Final of the biggest Moot Court competitions in Africa, the 25th Annual Human Rights Moot, and will face Stellenbosch University of South Africa. Uganda last qualified for this in 1997.
The pair having qualified as the best East African team will also automatically represent the region at the Commonwealth Moot Court Competitions in Melbourne – Australia in March 2017.
Makerere was filtered from over 70 teams from Anglophone, Lusophone and Francophone countries that participated in the build up to the Final.
The moot is on Human Rights under the African Charter as it celebrated 30 years of existence and focus is on withdrawal of States from the African Charter, Women Rights and Children’s Rights.
From Uganda, the competition attracted Makerere, Mukono based Uganda Christian University and Kampala International University (KIU).
When contacted, Simon Ssenyonga who was overjoyed by the achievement confirmed that every major University from within Africa had representation at the competitions.
“All the best Universities in Africa are here. And our very own Universities like UCU and KIU are here.”
In a congratulatory message released by the African Human Rights Moot Court Competitions organisers,
“Finals will be held at the Constitutional Court of South Africa on Saturday, 8 October 2016. The event will be live-streamed for those who wish to plug-in to an epic legal battle.”
