Research at the oldest and best Ugandan University, Makerere University seems to have taken a sharp turn towards success and sustainable research outcome after some of the institution’s researchers made progress in the making of diesel out of waste plastics.
The researchers from the Makerere University Agricultural Engineering Department made significant gains in testing a system which converts plastics into diesel. The project, is a partnership between Makerere University and University of Kentucky in the US.
The project aims at helping reduce on the abundance of waste plastic by converting it into diesel fuel that can be used for cars and machines throughout the country. Also owing to the fact that there is poor disposal of plastics in the country.
The project’s lead researcher Prof. Noble Banadda says that a kilo of plastic waste can translate into a litre of diesel, which goes for about 3,000 shillings at common fuel stations across the country.
The diesel produced at Makerere was tested and found to be of good quality although the process through which it is made has to be made more efficient before it can become commercially viable.
