As more details are discovered in the report issued by the Makerere University visitation committee, we have also learned about the committee’s shock when it discovered that Makerere University runs over 230 bank accounts some of which are not known by the government and the University management.
Citing accountability challenges, the committee revealed that these banks are too many for the University something that compelled them to request the Inspector General of Government (IGG) to investigate the matter.
According to the probe team, Makerere University has 11 bank accounts in Standard Chartered Bank which are not officially known by the University Management despite having Shs 25,187,024 million on deposit. Some of the accounts in question include. Makerere University-Noma Project, Muk Margaret Trowel School of Industrial & Fine Arts with $515, The Director Makerere University MRCI, The University Bursar Makerere University with $1,581, and The Chairman M.U.K Faculty Medic Comp SVS with $1,649. Another account was in Centenary Bank under the names of Makerere University Council.
This committee was employed by President Museveni at the end of 2016 to find solutions for Makerere’s unending strikes and other major problems affecting Uganda’s biggest public University. Among other observations discovered by the committee include ghost students and lecturers. The committee also suggested that all art courses be moved to other public Universities leaving Makerere with only science courses.
The University’s Vice Chancellor is expected to release his first official statement regarding this report at the end of February 2018. We shall keep you posted.
