Makerere University apparently has run bankrupt and is seeking to get ‘intervention and rescue’ from the government to help it in the outstanding salary arrears says the Vice Chancellor, Prof John Ddumba Ssentamu.
The professor according to the Daily Monitor was responding to an inquiry into the delay of staff June salaries yesterday, Prof Ddumba said: “It is a reality, there is no money. Even me, I’m a university employee and I haven’t been paid.”
He added: “We have approached government to give us money. By end of next week, we shall pay them.” This follows a complaint by lecturers over delayed payment. A lecturer speaking on condition of anonymity, said they are troubled by the salary delay.
Muslim professors and lecturers are believed to have had their Eid celebrations in a not so happy mood as they had not received their salary as yet.
