Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe has revealed measures of minimizing the lengthy clearance process for transcripts to only two offices.
Prof. Nawangwe made the revelation while addressing attendees of Day 2 of the 73rd Graduation Ceremony held in the Freedom Square on 14th February, 2023.
“I wish to inform graduands, alumni and stakeholders that we have shortened the clearance process,” he announced.
Previously, prospective graduates and alumni had to endure a tedious procedure of clearance in order to acquire academic documents like transcripts and certificates.
“We have reviewed this and one is now required to clear with only two (2) offices namely Makerere University Library and the Office of the University Bursar,” the VC added.
One had to visit around 10 different jurisdictions in order to be approved for graduation and subsequent receipt of an academic transcript.
This limited many from timely acquiring the much needed documents especially for employment and further education purposes.
In response to the needs of several alumni and stakeholders, the University Management organized the first ever Public Fair on Transcripts and Certificates in November 2022 at the Freedom Square as a means of reducing the backlog.
“I am happy to report that during the three (3) weeks, we served and listened to more than 11,000 clients. We issued than 4,650 certificates and 4,113 transcripts,” Prof Nawangwe revealed.
Information reaching this website indicates that the administration has decided that the Public Fair on Transcripts and Certificates becomes an annual event so that more documents are issued out.
The VC however apologized to graduands for not instantly receiving their transcripts at this year’s graduation ceremony.
“Due to unforeseen challenges with the importation of blanks for transcripts, we apologise that we are unable to issue the transcripts immediately after graduation. However, we are making every effort to issue the transcripts after one month,” he said.
Makerere University 73rd Graduation is on going till Friday 17th February with a total of 13221 students expected to graduate by the end of the week-long ceremony.
