A Facebook post by the activist and feminist Dr. Stella Nyanzi yesterday revealed that the Staff Appeals Tribunal of Makerere has lifted her suspension by Makerere University last year declaring it illegal faulting procedural improprieties.
““Wuuuuululululu! We won, my people, we won…Makerere University Staff Tribunal judged in my favor…”, read her post on Facebook.
Nyanzi was suspended last year from the university for insulting the First Lady and the Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni.
According to the law the tribunal relied on the Employment Act 2006, suspensions shall not exceed four weeks during which investigations are being conducted. The Doctor has however under suspension for over a year without a conclusive position on her suspension.
“The suspension of the appellant…dated 31st March, 2017…is hereby set aside,” read parts of the ruling.
She was also awarded the remedies she sought from the tribunal including the payment of all her salary since the time the suspension was served and also ordered the university to conduct disciplinary actions against Nyanzi, if any within 30 days.
She celebrated her victory on her social media including crediting the key players in the struggle. She particularly thanked her lawyer, Isaac Ssemakadde for his role in her victory.
“I celebrate my brilliant lawyer, brother, friend and comrade – Isaac Ssemakade – for a tough legal battle won…,” submitted Dr. Stella Nyanzi.
Ssemakadde has recently been at the fore front of legal battles against universities. He represented Yasin Sentumbwe and Simon Semuwemba, two students who had been expelled from UCU in 2016 and won the case. He has also represented many other students from Makerere University.
The ruling means Dr. Stella Nyanzi can now resume her classes as if nothing had happened because she is a free woman.
