The Makerere University strike has been on for the last two weeks and has freezed every activity at the campus. On this issue, the university council had a meeting with the students’ leaders to see the way forward and decided that the 15% fee increment for all incoming first years will not apply on the functional fees hence affecting only the tuition fees.
However, the students are now confused on which side to take between the guild suspended prime minister Emmanuel Johnson Obbo and the acting guild president Judith Nalukwago. Obbo, the suspended prime minister circulated a printed document to the students body indicating that the strike had been called off and this led to his suspension by the guild for representing his own interests instead of the opinions and positions of the students’ body.
The absence of the guild president has also led to the split of the guild. He was yesterday released from the safe house and then re arrested. Mariam Kyomugisha was appointed the acting guild prime minister of the university.
The students seem not want to stop the strike because they want the increment to not only be removed off functional fees but demolished forever. They also want their suspended fellow students back to the university.
