A 23-year-old student from Makerere University finds himself in police custody following his arrest on charges of rape. The accused, identified as a fourth-year Engineering student, stands accused of sexually assaulting a 22-year-old female student from Metropolitan International University’s Kampala campus.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the alleged incident took place on February 4 at Makerere University’s Hall of Residence. The victim, pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in tourism, was purportedly referred to the suspect by her roommate for guidance on internship procedures at Entebbe Airport.
“The accused allegedly raped the girl from one of the halls,” ASP Owoyesigyire stated.
Reportedly, the victim initially contacted the suspect seeking advice on internship matters. The suspect arranged a meeting at Makerere University Hall, where he resides, on February 4 at 4 p.m. Upon meeting, he allegedly took her to his room under the guise of explaining internship procedures. However, as the victim attempted to leave, the suspect locked the door and assaulted her.
According to the victim’s statement to the police, the suspect muffled her cries by covering her face with a pillow during the assault. Subsequently, on February 5, the victim and her roommate reported the incident to the Makerere police station.
ASP Owoyesigyire confirmed that samples were collected and submitted to the Government Analytical Laboratory as part of the ongoing investigation into the case.
Following the report, Ms. Jane Namaganda, a lawyer at the Center for Health, Human Rights, and Development (CEHURD), intervened after learning of alleged attempts by the suspect’s family to obstruct justice. Their intervention reportedly led to the suspect’s arrest on February 9.
Ms. Namaganda urged the police to expedite the investigation, emphasizing the importance of holding perpetrators accountable. She emphasized the necessity of ensuring that educational institutions remain safe spaces for all students, particularly women.
The case underscores the urgency of addressing issues of sexual violence within university campuses and highlights the critical role of law enforcement and legal advocacy in seeking justice for survivors.
