Brian Omassajja, a 26-year-old first-year student at Makerere University, is in urgent need of financial assistance to undergo a life-saving kidney transplant. Diagnosed with double kidney failure in December 2023, Omassajja, who hails from Gayaza, Namavundu, has been relying on dialysis for survival. However, to improve his quality of life and regain his health, he now requires a transplant estimated to cost Shs 40 million (approximately USD 10,500).
Omassajja, a Bachelor’s student in Library and Information Science, had his world turned upside down in his first year at university. After several tests, doctors confirmed that both of his kidneys had failed, likely due to prolonged antibiotic use for another ailment. Since then, he has endured regular dialysis sessions, which are physically taxing and financially burdensome for his family.
Fortunately, Omassajja has identified a donor and has been admitted to Jaypee Hospital in India, where the surgery is scheduled. While the first major hurdle of securing a donor has been overcome, the family is now struggling to cover the remaining costs associated with the transplant, including the surgery itself, as well as accommodation and upkeep for Omassajja, his donor, and a caretaker during their stay in India.
Family Appeals for Urgent Support
Omassajja’s sister, Amal Brenda, shared the family’s emotional and financial struggle. “My brother, son, and friend to many needs this surgery to have a chance at a healthy future. I understand that these times are tough for many, but any support—financially or in the form of prayers and encouragement—will mean the world to us,” she expressed, adding that Omassajja’s need for a transplant goes beyond medical necessity; it’s a chance for him to reclaim his life.
The family is appealing to the public for donations to help them raise the needed Shs 40 million. Contributions can be made via mobile money to:

Understanding Kidney Transplants and Kidney Failure
A kidney transplant is often the best option for patients with end-stage kidney disease, providing a more permanent solution than dialysis. Kidneys are essential for filtering waste and excess fluid from the blood, and their failure results in dangerous fluid buildup, affecting overall health. Unlike other organs, only one healthy kidney is required to replace two failed kidneys, making living-donor transplants a viable option.
As Omassajja awaits the procedure in India, he and his family remain hopeful that with the public’s support, he will soon be on the path to recovery. For Brian, this transplant represents more than just a medical procedure—it is a second chance at life.
The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude in advance to all those who can contribute financially or lend moral support, as every gesture brings them closer to a future where Brian can continue his education and live without the daily challenges of kidney failure.
