Makerere University student, Mr. Richard Ssebuganda whose right hand was ruptured during the ‘Open for all’ strike earlier this year on Feb 8, was arrested at the precincts of Parliament by police for inciting violence on Monday this week.
Ssebuganda, pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree of Biomedical Sciences got his right hand ruined by a teargas canister that found him just inside his room at Lumumba hall, Makerere University.
Since then, no efforts have been put in place to see him compensated.
According to a confidential source, instead of the compensation, he is threatened by the administration to have him suspended.
“One University administrator threatened to have him suspended if he didn’t relent from the cause of pursuing compensation for his raptured hand,” a source revealed.
The source has it that efforts to have Ssebuganda rehabilitated did not materialize as Makerere University administration and police who were directly liable for his disability all neglected him soon as the media withdrew its attention from him.
And since then, he was left to wade through moments of depression with all his attempts to hold the University administration accountable failing to harbor fruit.
For him to practice his profession, Ssebuganda has to purchase a prosthetic hand that is estimated to cost him over shs. 50m
According to the Kampala Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Shamim Malende, Ssebuganda was arrested together with John Bosco Sserunkuuma, Brian Ssemanda, Moses Seruga whose files are registered under SD ref: 24/05/09/22/CRB No. 1476 of 2022.
Police court at Buganda road may sit anytime on Wednesday, September 7, 2022.
