A section of Makerere University students has informed fellow campusers to iron their red gowns ahead of a strike scheduled to be held on Monday, 31st January 2022.
The disgruntled students have vowed to strike over the university’s continued blended learning despite President Museveni’s directive to have the economy fully reopened.
A few science, engineering and other practical course students are allowed to study physically on campus while others continue to struggle with the slow e-learning via Makerere’s online learning platform, MUELE.
According to the students, they spend a lot of money on data to access the slow platform. Meanwhile, it is also said that some lecturers find difficulty in teaching while using this online platform. Other students claim that they are doing exams for course units they were never taught on top of being chased from halls of residence despite paying fully.
“Iron your red gown, it’s time for action,” one of the students announced.
The students based on the above issues to declare ‘Bloody Monday’ in a bid to air out their grievances directly to the University Management.
Campus Bee understands that Nawangwe warned students against holding a strike in his letter on the opening of the new academic year. According to Nawangwe, Management received reports of plans by some students with encouragement of external actors to disrupt university activities. Nawangwe further warned that the students involved will face serious disciplinary before advising them to stop the planned strike.
