Having been fascinated by technology at very young ages, Makerere University students decided to come together to put their knowledge and enthusiasm to good use by inventing a phone app. They brainstormed and thought their work should count for something more positive…Being members of ‘baana ba SEVO’ umbrella and thinking big then suggested there wasn’t anything at the time as big as an app for the President. Finding no other President they could think of who had an app, they decided to create the SEVO App for HE President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Baana Ba SEVO is an alliance/forum of young Ugandan people between the ages of 18-30 years (born in era of President Museveni) who are living testimonies of the positive economic, social and political transformation in Uganda since 1986.
Who are the developers?
The developers of the SEVO App are young, creative people under the baana ba Sevo umbrella, including Eddie Mugulusi, Lawrence Mawerere, Michael Kakande, Silas Kato…all students of Software Engineering at the biggest public university in Uganda.
What is the SEVO App?
Basically, this is an easy-to-use smartphone application to primarily bring what one needs to know about His Excellency, Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, direct to a phone user in the QUICKEST and SIMPLEST way. What is NRM all about anyway? What is His Excellency’s greatest vision for this country? And simply, what kind of food does he eat? Yes, this application also humanizes His Excellency to people who have always seen him as only a political figure. In just one minute someone can know His Excellency’s vision for the country, and at the same time also what he grows in his garden.
How it works
Because of the desire to make it a very easy-to-use app that anybody can use and from the feedback given, this app has been designed with these sections:
- The ABOUT section; profile of His Excellency, history, manifesto, achievements, mission is found here
- The GAME section; fun part of the app for users to see how well they know His Excellency. It is a quiz with numerous questions where one question will have four choice options
- RECOMMEND TO section; an app is fully appreciated by users if it has an option to be interactive in a way that one can share details about it with someone else, and the SEVO App does exactly that in the simplest way! One touch leads you to sharing on social media platforms Facebook and Twitter.
- There is added information on campaign schedule and campaign updates so you can follow what is actually going on while it is going on.
When will the public be able to get it?
The general public will be able to get this app on the Google store market after it is officially launched, the date will be forwarded. However, on 11th March 2015, 11am-1pm at Mackinnon Suites, there will be an exhibition to unveil the app where the public including interested youth, campusers, and technology houses will have a chance to see what it is about. Everyone is invited, whether you are an Information Technology student, professional, or just someone fascinated by invention, whether you think His Excellency “SEVO” is the best thing that happened to Uganda in terms of political turmoil, or whether you simply want to take a stroll to town!
Have they met the President?
The baana ba SEVO alliance travelled to Moroto District in February for the Tarehe Sita celebrations where they caught His Excellency’s eye and plans have been made to meet him when he is less engrossed in a very tiring and mobile schedule.
The President was more than delighted when he heard about the app since he always advocates for people, especially the younger generation, to think out of the box and to put their skills to positive use.
