To be specific, on the 30th of April, 2020, Makerere University’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe had a video chat with the C.E.O of MTN Uganda, Mr. Wim Vanhelleputte , the C.E.O. of Africell Uganda – Mr. Daoud Ziad and Mr Somasekhar the C.E.O of Airtel Uganda over the possibility forming a partnership that would focus on creating a way for students and staff to access the University’s eLearning platforms at zero rates.
Well, it turns out that free access to eLearning platforms isn’t the only strategy that Prof. Nawangwe will be pursuing as he took it to Facebook today in a post where he says he is lobbying for hugely subsidized laptops from Tech giants to assist students access eLearning platforms so as to continue their academic semesters during this COVID-19 lockdown. He went on to emphasize that the target partners are Dell, Microsoft and Google which the institution is already working with.
However this left many wondering what remedy shall be put in place to assist students who might still not be able to afford the laptops at subsidized rates.
We at Campus Bee shall keep you posted about any developments on this story as it unfolds.
