Makerere University has launched the digitization of students records, taking the lead in the safe digital storage of academic records.
The digitization, under the project dubbed DARP, was launched on Friday, April 19, 2024 by the minister of education and sports Hon. Janet Museveni. The project was spearhead by Mrs. Patience Mushengyezi, a lecturer and wife to UCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi.
Speaking at the launch, VC Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe said the project is confirmation of the importance Makerere University has attached to digitalisation and Electronic Services.
“The launch of this project is not only a landmark achievement, but also confirmation of the importance that Makerere University council and management attached to the role that digitalization and E-services play in the implementation of our strategic plan. One of the strategic plan goals is a professionally managed University,” he said.
Prof. Nawangwe further said that the university is now in better position to provide data and information on time, adding that they look forward to having students download their own transcripts.
“With the digitalization of a student’s academic records, the university is now in a better position to provide the required information and data on time. Our ultimate goal is that students should be able to download their own transcripts,” he added.
Minister of state for higher education, Hon. Chrysostom Muyingo, who stood in for Janet Museveni, said there is need for universities to manage massive amounts of academic records and efficient record keeping.
“In today’s fast-paced world, universities must manage massive amount of academic information and efficient record keeping; this necessitates that this information is accurate, accessible, and secure, benefiting both the institution and the stakeholders,” he said.
Mrs. Lorna Magara, chair Makerere University council said they are happy to see the actualisation of the project and promised to engage government to support Makerere University to roll out the project to all colleges.
“As council, we are extremely excited to see this work come to fruition. And we want to thank you very much once again, the team and we know that this search has started here will definitely roll out, you have the full council support. We are going to ask government to support us roll this project out to all the colleges so that Makerere University will be totally and fully digitised,” she said.
The DARP project was implemented by the Makerere University Research and Innovation Fund, funded by MasterCard and the government of Uganda.
With this project officially enrolled, Makerere University alumni will be able to access their academic documents with ease. Similarly, employers will be able to quickly verify academic documents submitted to them by prospective employees.
