Makerere University dully nominated candidates who don’t meet the required standards to face disqualification, the Dean of students Ms. Winifred Kabumbuli has confirmed.
According to her, for a student to run for any post of the Electoral Commission, they should have no leadership background for the past nine months.
“Our office has received reports that some of the dully nominated candidates for the post of Electoral Commission have been student representative at different levels of student leadership,” her letter dated Nov 17 reads in part.
She adds : “Shall not have been Ministers in the Guild, members of College, School or institute executive, executives at halls of residence or members of the guild representative for the past nine months shall be eligible to contest for membership to the Guild Electoral Commission.”
The University Dean of Students says anyone found contravening the election guidelines is likely to face a risk of disqualification.
“This is in contravention of Article 11(b) of the Makerere University Students’ Guild Statute.”
The eligible candidate is expected to be a continuing student on normal progress and must have obtained a Second Class lower points of a 3.0 CGPA.
Ms Kabumbuli noted that investigations into the matter are ongoing and once verified all the said candidates will be disqualified.
As per the Makerere University 88th Guild election roadmap, students are expected to cast their votes on November 30, 2022 to vote for the Guild President, Guild Representative Councilors (GRCs), Senior Common Room, College Council, Debating Union and Games.
Swearing in for the successful candidates will thereafter take place on December 5, 2022.
