Makerere University has been selected to host the local edition of the prestigious Hult Prize Global Innovations Challenge slated for 2019.
The Hult Prize Innovations Challenge is an initiative of Bill Clinton, the 42nd president of the United States in partnership with the United Nations (UN). The competition seeks to bring together great minds from Universities and Colleges around the globe in a bid to solve the World’s most pressing issues through ideas.
This annual international innovations’ competition leverages around business and science for profitable ideas that challenge social entrepreneurs to innovate so as to tackle society’s challenges.
In this local edition that takes two weeks, participants are expected to answer the United Nations Challenge by showcasing start up solutions in teams of three or four members. The 2019 edition will tackle youth unemployment where various teams will be expected to develop an idea that is geared towards provision of jobs to over 10 million people by 2025.
The winner of the intra Campus event will advance to the regional finals around the world to compete for the Grand Prize of US $ 1 million (About UGX 3.7 billion)
Silver Walugembe, the Makerere University Campus Director confirmed the opportunity granted to Makerere to host this event.
“We have been selected as the 2019 hosts and over 40 teams have registered their participation. We expect over 200 teams to take part in this local edition,” Walugembe confirmed.
Students from University College London won the 2018 edition after coming up with an idea to make fast, effective and affordable rice drying available to smallholder farmers who lack the technology.
Prospective participants should register with the Campus Director at Makerere University so that they are guided and made viable for participation.
