One of the outstanding reasons for dropouts of students in universities has been lack of tuition and after a long period of debating on how to combat it, Makerere University has approved a policy to allow vulnerable students work for the institution and get tuition in return.
With this new policy, the university will stop hiring contractors from outside the institution and instead call upon the disadvantaged students to do the work.
In an exclusive interview with the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, the students will be invited to do those jobs and both parties shall agree on the payment plans.
In this, if the student wants the university to keep their money for tuition then it will be done and if they want to be given the money to manage it themselves they university will give them their money.
The vice chancellor added on this and said that there will be conditions for the students to access the jobs such as good perfomance in their respective courses and good behavior.
The cited jobs were; cleaning, mass registration of students, painting and slashing, among others, as those that can be done by the students.
The policy only awaits to be approved by the university council.
