Following the closure of Makerere University last year after a sit-down strike by the university’s academic staff over salary arrears amounting to Shs28 billion shillings, president Museveni appointed a nine – man visitation committee to foresee the institution’s problems. However, members of parliament were left in shock yesterday after finding out a whooping shs2.4 billion expenditure has already been lost in the committee’s early activities. While appearing before the MPs yesterday, state house officials led by Minister for the presidency Esther Mbayo revealed that the committee has already spent Shs2.434 billion in allowances and travel abroad.
From this expenditure, Shs1.811 billion has been spent on allowances and Shs623 million on internal travel. State House officials also revealed that the committee has traveled to Europe and America to find out how big education institutions are run but declined to account for the internal travel expenditure in such a short period.
All the drama happened yesterday after state house officials approached parliament requesting for a supplementary budget putting the visitation committee as a major reason for an increased state house budget.
